Network Printers

Direct print supports network printers. Here are some things to be aware of when using network printers with direct print.

UNC names

Network printers have a UNC path and sometimes a mapped printer name. Direct print will use the UNC version of the printer name.

User context

If your printer uses authentication, you must make sure that the direct print service user has access to the network printer.

Delays

Windows will look for a network printer when you try to access it. If the printer is offline or the network is slow, you may experience delays. Network delays can easily be in the range of 30 seconds to two minutes. During this time, your direct print is halted. Therefore, you should make sure that your network printers are answering fast.

Failed authentication can also cause delays.
